Summary
R744 use in public transport air conditioning applications (bus and rail) continues to be considered while facing both challenges and opportunities. R744 use as an air conditioning refrigerant is challenged by the low thermodynamic efficiency when operating transcritically at elevated ambient temperatures due to its low critical point. These inherent efficiency penalties in cooling are offset by its competitive performance in heating operation with extended operating map. To further improve the overall system efficiency, recently developed refrigerant blends based on R744 with hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) and hydrofluocarbons (HFC) refrigerants aim to improve on the performance challenges of R744 by reducing critical pressure and elevating critical temperature.
This paper provides an overview of an evaluation of a prototype R744 heat pump system for bus applications in comparison to the newly developed alternative refrigerant blend. Simulation performance as well as experimental results in both heating and cooling operation are presented that confirm an approximately 20% lower capacity while providing similar efficiency compared to R744.
