Summary
Since the mid XIX century, scientists and technicians have worked on searching the best possible refrigerant, except discovering, with rare exceptions, its defects, both from energetic and environmental points of view, after a few decades of use. Nowadays, we are facing the search of the fourth generation of refrigerants, composed by natural refrigerants, such as hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and ammonia, and synthetic chemicals, as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and hydrochlorofluoroolefins (HCFOs). However, natural refrigerants cannot always satisfy all process requirements, due to toxicity and/or flammability issues, beside thermodynamic properties not suitable for all the applications. Moreover, contradictory studies on HFOs have risen some doubts on their compatibility with the environment. This review wants to clarify this topic, highlighting the actual situation, as proved by experimental results published in the open literature, including both direct and indirect effects of refrigerants, as GWP, TEWI and the possible atmospheric pollution given by their by-products.
