Summary

In order to understand the energy consumption contribution of the door openings in a refrigerated display cabinet, a simple reduced order model was developed, assuming a closed-door base load to which the energy consumption of each door opening is added and consists of a constant amount of energy as function of the number of door openings and a second part which is a function of the opening duration. A vertical refrigerated display cabinet with incorporated condensing unit and two glass doors was tested in a climate room at the design conditions of 25°C and 60% relative humidity. A series of tests was performed with various door opening times and frequencies kept constant over 12 hours. The test results confirm the model assumptions and indicate that the constant energy consumption part attributed to the door opening dynamics corresponds to the energy loss during a door opening of 1.9 seconds.
