Résumé
Environmental concerns raised by high-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants have triggered a series of activities around the world to curtail the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Many of the promising alternative refrigerants being investigated are flammable and fall under either A2L or A3 safety classification of ASHRAE 34. To properly address flammable refrigerants in safety standards, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology Institute (AHRTI) undertook several research projects to conduct leak and ignition testing of flammable refrigerants under whole room scale conditions.
This paper summarizes the results of testing R-454C and R-290 in 1-door, 3-door and 4-door commercial refrigerated display cases. A full-scale room was built for a series of tests to compare refrigerant dispersion behaviors and ignition event severity. The testing simulated refrigerant leaks from the evaporator inside the display case and a condensing unit mounted either on top or at bottom of the display case, with or without units running. The tests also included using the condenser fan circulation to disperse leaked refrigerant as a mitigation method. R-290 charge levels ranging from 114g to 1000g and R-454C charge levels ranging from 150g to ~3800g were tested. Key observations will be summarized for purpose of understanding the relevant contents in the standards IEC/UL 60335-2-89.
