The main purpose of this research is to reveal comfort and productivity in an office building renovated to the ZEB in terms of electricity saving. The aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 caused serious electricity shortages, requiring increased electricity savings. 15% electricity saving was required by the Japanese government in summer 2011. But electricity saving can cause decreased comfort and productivity. Therefore, compatibility between energy conservation and comfort in office buildings has become a significant problem. The office surveyed in this study mainly adopted gas as a heat source, so that methods of electricity saving were limited. In this study, a field survey and a questionnaire were conducted in summer 2011. As a result, the rate of dissatisfied workers in comprehensive satisfaction tests was 3%. As for electricity saving, 87% of workers had an increased degree of environmental consciousness after the earthquake, and 85% of workers were were in favour of electricity saving. However, 36% of workers felt the loss of comfort by electricity saving was unacceptable. Electricity saving taking comfort into consideration is very important. In addition, before and after the electricity saving, self-assessment of productivity decreased by 4.0%, which was less than the result under electricity saving (6.6%). In the renovated buiding, the peak electricity demand was reduced by about 60% compared with a regular office building.
