Summary

Burning of fossil fuels is the primary method for providing high temperatures for space heating and industrial processes. Development of electric driven heat pump refrigeration cycles are being considered as the primary option to displace boilers, but refrigerant selection is critical to balance equipment design and delivery temperatures. Numerous new low GWP refrigerant options are being proposed in chiller equipment and could be potentially employed by reversing the cycle to become heaters, but new considerations would need to be assessed to allow their use, e.g., pressure vessel design, thermodynamic cycles, efficiency, chemical stability.
This paper will provide areview of low GWP refrigerant options for use in various air and water source heating cycles. Refrigerants will include, R-1336mzz(Z), R-1336mzz(E), R-514A, R-1233zd(E), R-1224yd(Z), R-515B and R-1234ze(E) versus delivery temperature. Different thermodynamic cycle approaches will be explored and will be reviewed for their impacts on the efficiency and complexity of various heaters.
